Canada and Mexico have, in Donald Trump’s view, “stolen” the US’ automotive manufacturing sector, amongst other crimes and misdemeanours. This is despite the USMCA trade agreement which Trump himself repeatedly described as “the best trade deal ever” when he signed it during his first presidency. The reality, it must be said, is that the Canadian and Mexican automotive manufacturing sectors are really just pawns, large pawns it is true, in a wider political game.
